The slender Olapa tree, whose elongated graceful
leaves are like the fingers of a hula dancer, a few exist
here. According to a state biologist, this native forest was
one of the richest and most diverse forest areas on Maui.
Naio, the false sandalwood which is popular for woodcarving,
is recorded as growing profusely in Piiholo at the end of
the last century, with some tree trunks measuring 4 feet in
diameter. Youll also see some Koaia (a relative of Koa)
at least 35 feet tall, a rare find for this endangered tree
